Making it Matter in Dover, DE: Putting Heroes First In Our First Year

Dover, DE: 1 Year Anniversary

We are the first MISSION BBQ in our nation’s first state, so it has been a privilege to be part of this truly historic and patriotic community.

Especially with an Air Force Base in our backyard! While one of their main missions at Dover AFB is to prepare and deploy Airmen, ours is to Serve them. Even before officially opening, there was an enthusiastic crowd attending our Military Appreciation Night, helping to raise $7285 for USO Delaware (www.usa.org). Those generous first customers also helped us Make It Matter during separate pre-opening evenings, raising $2830 for the City of Dover FOP and $1796 for the National Fallen Firefighter Association.

Among the most moving moments: feeding families and military teams during Dignified Transfers at the Air Base. U.S. Military who die in the theater of operation while serving their country are individually transferred from an aircraft to a waiting vehicle, then taken to the port mortuary. (www.mortuary.af.mil/About-Us/Dignified-Transfer). It has been humbling to support such solemn events, including those for fallen First Responders and Correction Officers in our area. Through the generous support of customers who participated in the American Heroes Cup program, we helped raise funds for Wreaths Across America.

Armed Forces Day was especially great when WWII Veterans from the Greatest Generation joined us. 96-year-old Don Kennedy Sr. and 94-year-old Werner Schlautitz were here for a special LIVE rendition of our National Anthem. They’re still going strong! And the food was going fast (but not as fast as the drivers) at Dover International Speedway when we got the opportunity to be VIP Caterers. We’re always quick to feed NASCAR pit crews and platoons of new recruits, take part in Military promotions or retirement ceremonies, plus drop by with BBQ for the Fraternal Order of Police lodge, Fire Halls, and EMT Stations.

230 years ago, Delaware became “The First State.” In 2017, we’re proud to celebrate our first year here and make America’s Heroes our #1 priority. Thank you, Dover!
