The Greatest of the Greatest Honored in Greenbelt

PedevillanoHe was the youngest bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Corps' 306th Bomb Group, flying six combat missions before being shot down by Nazi fighter pilots in 1944. He and his crew were later taken as prisoners of war before being liberated by U.S. Army forces under General George S. Patton. In 2015, at age 93, he received the Presidential Unit Citation, with one Oak Leaf Cluster, for extraordinary heroism in combat.

Honored to serve an American Hero from the Battle of Iwo Jima

72 years ago this week, one of the bloodiest South Pacific battles of World War II had just begun. Seven thousand Marines lost their lives during the five weeks of fighting. Among the survivors was Carlos Showalter, an 18-year-old line sergeant with Marine Company C-1-23, which suffered a 94 percent casualty rate. “When it was all over,” Showalter said, “Only 38 returned home. By the grace of God, I was one of them.”
